Roger Federer and Kevin Anderson meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.

Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Adrian Mannarino that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Federer won 90 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Federer lost just five of 51 first serve points, had 41 winners and saved all four of his break points. Federer has lost a combined 28 games in his last three matches and hasn’t come close to losing a set this tournament. Federer has now won 29 of his last 34 sets played and is going to be the champion of the Wimbledon once again if he continues to serve the way he’s serving currently. Federer hopes to make the semifinals of a grand slam for the eighth time in his last nine tries and his fifth straight Wimbledon semifinal appearance. Federer has lost in the quarterfinal of a grand slam just seven times since 2004. Federer has won 10 of his last 11 matches on grass court.

Kevin Anderson is coming off a four sets win over Gael Monfils that took 51 games to decide. In the victory, Anderson won 81 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Anderson hit 20 aces, won 72 percent of his total service points and managed to win three tiebreaks to advance to the quarterfinals. Anderson showed just how great of a weapon his serve can be when he needs it most, and he’s now combined for 76 aces in his last three matches. While many players have a hard time hitting power shots on grass, the South African has been the exception and it gives him a punchers chance against anybody in the remaining draw. Anderson has a chance to make his second career grand slam semifinal and first since the 2017 US Open. Anderson is 1-1 in career grand slam quarterfinal matches. Anderson has won four of his last five matches on grass court.

These two have played four times and Federer has won all four meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Cincinnati Masters, a match Federer won in 14 games. Anderson has never won a set against Federer. This will be the first match between these two on grass court.

Anderson has a chance to pull off the upset as long as his serve holds up, but he’s had this power serve for years and still usually gets bounced early in big tournaments and falls short against the top tier players. You need more than a big serve to win these type of matches, and while he’s an underrated player overall, Anderson hasn’t shown he’s capable of rising to the occasion. Federer should be the clear favorite to win this tournament, and he has the return that’s going to force Anderson to play balls he doesn’t want to.

Federer wins this match either in three or four sets.
